What is Belling / Underreaming?

Belling, also known as underreaming, is the process of widening the base of a bored pile to increase its bearing capacity. This technique is particularly effective in clay soils where the enlarged base distributes the load over a greater area, reducing bearing pressure and improving foundation stability.

The process involves drilling a standard diameter shaft, then using specialised belling tools to expand the bottom of the pile to a larger diameter. This creates a bell-shaped footing that significantly increases the load-bearing capacity of the pile without requiring a larger shaft diameter throughout.
